how to write an obituary

marilyn-palla–Marilyn Palla passed Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016. She was a longtime resident of Paso Robles. She was born in Atascadero (the only hospital around at the time) in February 1933 to John and Bertha Gerst, a pioneer family living in the area. She met John Palla at a friend’s wedding in 1952 and they were married in 1953. From their residence on top of Plymouth Hill, they watched the golden hills of the landscape change to lush green vineyards, residences, and thriving businesses over the past 53 years. They owned Palla Equipment off of 13th Street for 40 years and were very involved in the community which, at the time, was considerably smaller.

Marilyn and John were blessed with two beautiful girls, Sharon and Stacie. They were Marilyn’s main focus, while John managed the company. Marilyn was an avid tennis player well into her 70’s. It was only after having shoulder and knee surgery that she would eventually put down her racket. That being said, you could always find her looking for and watching televised professional matches. She absolutely enjoyed the game, her longtime association with her friends in the tennis league, and the events that they all shared.

Marilyn enjoyed traveling, but seemed most happy when at home experiencing life on the Central Coast. Whether it was spending time with family, having lunch with friends, wine tasting, enjoying the countless recreational opportunities, or just visiting their second home in Cambria; these were all things she particularly enjoyed.

Besides Marilyn’s obvious dedication to her husband, John, her girls, and family, she was also very dedicated to her longtime Paso friends and they were dedicated to her. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Williams (husband Jeff) and Stacie Westbrook (husband Tony); five grandchildren: Ryan Williams (wife Joy), Lindsey Williams, Kristin Bluth (husband Macky), Maura Westbrook, Gavin Westbrook; and four great-grandkids.

At Marilyn’s request, a graveside service will be held at the Paso Robles District Cemetery, Friday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles.

How to write an obituary

How to publish an obituary

Be sure to answer these questions when writing an obituary.

The death of a loved one is not an easy time, nor is condensing his or her life into a short summary. Many people ask for a template or a guide on how to write the obituary because they are not sure what to include or not to include. Below we have provided a helpful guide to aid in the creation of an obituary, as well as information about submitting one for publication on the Paso Robles Daily News‘ website.

Include your loved one’s full name, including maiden name, nickname or any other name that your loved one went by. In the first line, include his or her full name, last city of residence and date and cause of death. For example, Jane Alice (Smith) Doe, 83, of Paso Robles died on June 1, 2015, of a stroke at her care facility while surrounded by loved ones. Be sure to include the person’s connection to North San Luis Obispo County.

Next, include dates and locations of birth, marriage and other important life events. Also include any history of the person’s life such as schools attended, military service, place of employment and position held, membership in any organizations such as civic, fraternal and church, and hobbies or special interests. A brief example: Mrs. Doe was born on April 13, 1933, in Atascadero, the eldest child of Abraham and Emma Smith. She attended Atascadero schools and graduated from Atascadero High School in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart, John Doe, in 1953. He worked for the county of San Luis Obispo and they made their home in south Atascadero. They had three children, Margaret, John Jr. and Joseph, all of whom went through Atascadero schools.

At the end of the obituary list anyone that survives your loved one or preceded him or her in death. You can choose how far out in the family tree you go. Next include any information about memorial, funeral or graveside services. If it is open to the public, include the location, day and time of date. If the services are private, indicate that. If the family would prefer monetary contributions in lieu of flowers, include wording to that effect. For example: Jane was preceded in death by her husband, John Doe; brother, Charles Smith; and her parents, Abraham and Emma Smith. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Hess; three children, Margaret Rogers, John Doe Jr. and Joseph Doe, along with their spouses; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at Highlands Church in Paso Robles. Burial will follow at the Paso Robles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in her name to the Friends of the Atascadero Library.

Lately, she had been active in the Democrats Club and participated in local food banks.

John Newell Garfield.

–John Newell Garfield, 93, formerly of Paso Robles, died on Nov. 12, 2016, in Tiverton, R.I., after a brief illness. He was the great-grandson of James A. Garfield, 20th President of the United States, and grandson of James R. Garfield, Secretary of the Interior under President Theodore Roosevelt.

Born October 5, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, to John Newell Garfield and Janet Dodge Garfield, he spent his childhood in Mentor, Ohio. Many of those childhood years were spent living in Lawnfield, the former home of President Garfield that is now a National Park. He was predeceased by his two sisters and two brothers: Janet Brown, Frances Tillinghast, James R. Garfield II and Douglas D. Garfield.

He attended South Kent School in Kent, C.T., then joined the US Army in 1943. He served with the 182nd Infantry Americal Division in the Philippines, including the battle at Bougainville, and was among the first troops to enter Tokyo after the surrender of Japan in 1945. He was very proud of his service to his country and flew the American flag wherever he lived.

After the war, he worked in industrial sales to support his growing family. The family lived in Youngstown, Ohio; Lake Bluff, I.L.; Sewickley, PA; and Indianapolis, I.N., before finally settling in Lake Forest, I.L. After moving into Chicago, he worked until his retirement as a commercial sales agent for The Arthur Rubloff Company. He moved to Paso Robles, Calif., in 1988 where he lived until he moved to Massachusetts to be closer to his family.

His father died when he was very young, and he and his siblings were raised by his mother with the support of relatives and family friends. As a result, he grew up understanding two important truths: Family comes first and “family” goes beyond bloodlines to include trusted and treasured friends. He lived those truths every day of his life. Imbued with a deep sense of compassion and empathy, he was a hospice volunteer in Paso Robles, and lovingly cared for friends and family members in their final days. His intense loyalty also extended to his favorite Chicago sports teams, the Black Hawks, Bears and Cubs, and he died knowing that just a week earlier, his beloved Cubs won their first World Series since 1908.

He is survived by a large and loving extended family who knew him variously as Dad, Gramp, Garf, and Uncle Johnny. He leaves four children: John N. Garfield Jr. and his wife Natalie of Dartmouth, Mass.; Thomas C. Garfield and his wife Deborah of Harvard, Mass.; Christine H. Garfield of Silver City, N.M.; and Horace F. Garfield and his wife Marla of Louisville, K.Y. He also leaves six grandchildren, a great- grandson, a beloved sister-in-law, Olivia Garfield, and a boisterous, affectionate horde of nieces and nephews. He was formerly married to the late Christine Henriques Dodge and the late Lynn Hansen Garfield.

Interment will take place in Mentor, Ohio in January. A celebration of his life is scheduled for the summer at Cuttyhunk Island, Mass.
