Former Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian

Katcho Achadjian, a former San Luis Obispo County Supervisor and California State Assemblyman representing SLO County died Thursday at 68.

Achadjian, who attended Cuesta College and graduated from Cal Poly SLO, went on to be elected to the board of supervisors in 1998. He served on the board until 2010 when he was elected to the State Assembly as a Republican. He represented local residents in the State Assembly from 2010 to 2016. Over his career, he represented citizens from San Miguel to Lompoc.

Achadjian was a leader in the community since 1971, when he came to California from Beirut, Lebanon to complete his education and pursue the American Dream. He carried with him a distinctive work ethic instilled in him by his Armenian parents in Lebanon – an ethic that has served him well in his roles as a businessman, community volunteer, and legislator. On Dec.17, 1982, a day that served as a continuous source of pride for him, Achadjian became a United States citizen.

A lifelong community advocate, Achadjian volunteered in support of numerous civic, service and nonprofit organizations. He served as a member of the board of directors of Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and Chairman of San Luis Obispo’s French Hospital. Since 2008, he also served as a mentor to college students through the Executive Partners Leadership Council at Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business.

“Katcho was my friend and mentor,” says Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo). “He was a true public servant and an American success story. Katcho leaves a legacy of devotion to community, energetic representation, and consensus-building. Our sincerest condolences to his family for their loss. Today is a sad day for the Central Coast.”

Former Paso Robles High School coach and teacher Ed Railsback

–On Sunday, Paso Robles Schools posted the following announcement regarding the passing of Ed Railsback, a former teacher and coach at Paso Robles High School:

It is with great sorrow we inform you that Ed Railsback, retiree, passed away yesterday. Ed worked for PRJUSD from 9/5/1972-6/30/2008 in the following capacities:

  • 1972-1991 PRHS Social Studies Teacher
  • 1991-1998 PRHS Econ/Gov. Teacher
  • 1998-2005 PRHS Assistant Principal
  • 2005-2008 PRHS Principal
  • 6/30/2008 – Retired

He also coached/advised from 1972 on, in the following areas: activities, track, football, golf, and tennis. His wife Bonnie, and numerous other family members, worked for us. Currently, his daughter Tina is a counselor for us, and his two daughter-in-laws Jennifer and Tanya work for us as well. His grandchildren attend our schools and his children are PRHS graduates.

These were some of his parting words when he retired in 2008:

“It would be a gross understatement to say that my 39 years in education have been my lifeblood. The 36 years at Paso Robles High School have been tremendous. I have been privileged to have served in many capacities, all with the challenges and rewards. I cannot imagine who or what I would be without that experience. I will always be a Bearcat and be supportive of the students, staff, and community that have made Paso High a wonderful place to work. Thank you for entrusting me with our children’s future.”

His loss will be felt throughout this community as he truly was a Bearcat in every positive aspect of the word. Ed was a kind professional, and a wonderful man who truly made a difference in this community.

Obituary for Greg Grilli

Greg Grilli

–Planet Earth was made a little better by Greg’s birth on August 31, 1960 in San Jose, CA to Leo and Josephine Grilli. His schooling included Saint Martin’s, Cypress Middle School, Blackford High School (class of 1978), and De Anza College. Greg earned his master’s degree in industrial arts from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1985.

Greg Grilli was an accomplished cabinet maker through the 90s, until his love for nature set him on a new path. Greg began his new career as a park ranger in 2002 with Monterey County Parks. He continued to strive for more and attended, then graduated, from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department academy earning the highest marksmanship award for his class. In the same year, he graduated as class valedictorian from California Department of Parks and Recreation basic training and landed a prestigious assignment at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, in the Santa Cruz mountains. He retired in 2012.

Greg continued to work, part-time, as a substitute teacher at Paso Robles High School in welding, then at Mayan Hardwood, Inc. His volunteerism was widespread, he was most proud of his time with the Museum of Natural History in Morro Bay and working harvests at Midnight Cellars.

Greg found love with Brenda in 2003 and married her in 2009, which is when he gained a son in Anthony. His passions revolved around his friends and family, sharing wine, recipes, food, and tradition. His garden was a masterpiece and its abundance were shared with everyone he loved. Nature had a solid place in his heart, so he, Brenda, and Morti camped in the most beautiful places often. Greg’s generosity for friends was paramount to his personality. He would drop anything to help a friend. And, his grumbling was renowned, providing his friends the best fodder for loving imitation.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Leo Paul Grilli, and his mother, Josephine Mary Grilli. He is survived, begrudgingly, by his wife, Brenda Marie Keene-Grilli, stepson Anthony Kerstiens, sisters Paulette Grilli, Angela Grilli, brother Lenard Grilli, and twin brother Dave Grilli, as well as many nieces and nephews, and Morti Grilli, his four-legged buddy.

There will be a celebration of life held Sunday, March 15 at Midnight Cellars Winery from 2 to 4 p.m.

Obituary for Eileen B. Erickson Engleman

Eileen B. Erickson Engleman
March 16, 2020 – March 2, 2020
Sacramento, CA

Obituary for Eileen B. Erickson Engleman

–Fourteen days from her 90th birthday, Eileen entered heaven’s gates. After a long battle with dementia and her final months in hospice, Eileen is finally free from suffering and pain and is with her heavenly father. Together again, she was instantly reunited with her beloved husband, Eddie, and daughter, Linda. Eileen will be forever loved.

Eileen was born in Paso Robles, CA, the first of her siblings to be born in a hospital. She was raised in Creston and graduated from Paso Robles High School. She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in San Francisco with her nursing degree. She was married to Edwin Engleman for almost 40 years before he passed away in 1995. They first lived in Atascadero and moved to San Jose around 1959. She enjoyed working in several doctor’s offices including orthopedics and neuro surgery. However, on February 16, 1988, her world took on a new focus when her favorite grandson, Chris, was born. She retired to be able to spend as much time with him as possible. This was a huge help to her daughter and there was nothing that made Eileen happier than being with Chris. She loved her grandson so much. In 2002, she even moved from her much loved home in Willow Glen to Sacramento to be closer to her only grandchild. When Chris first brought his then fiancé, Sterling, to introduce her to his grandma several years ago, they immediately clicked and have had a special bond to the very end. Sterling had a special place in Eileen’s heart and loved her so much as she took the time to sit with her and listen to her stories. Eileen was blessed to attend their beautiful wedding in the Santa Cruz Mountains May 20, 2018 (her last time to be able to travel). Their beautiful daughter, Jade Elliott, was born on April 22, 2019 and every picture of her brought Eileen such pride and joy. You could always count on Eileen to be praying for her family that she loved so much.

While in San Jose, Eileen loved researching genealogy and enjoyed taking classes at the senior center. She met many wonderful life-long friends, especially Martha, attending these classes and loved traveling with her friends. She was proud that her family contributed to the Paso Robles Pioneer Museum. She enjoyed learning the computer and the whole new world of easily accessible genealogy she could now access. In Sacramento, she loved attending the “Women Alone” events at Creekside Christian Church in Elk Grove. Many heartfelt thanks go out to the wonderful ladies in this group who continued to visit Eileen up to the very end. I hope each of you who visited her know what a precious gift this was.

Eileen enjoyed traveling and treasured her annual trips to Yosemite with the Raders and got to Lake Tahoe as often as she could. Her travels kept her busy and she enjoyed documenting her trips with photos.

Since 2013 when she broke her hip and could not be home alone, Eileen was in a residential care home, A Caring Hand, in Elk Grove, CA. Special thanks goes out to the staff who took such good care of her during her ups and downs, especially Mike, Carmella, Amy, Juliet, Vicky, Edward, and past staff. Judi always knew she was well cared for at all times and this greatly eased her mind. Thanks also to the staff at Suncrest Hospice who lovingly cared for her during her final five months of life and provided great support for her as well as her daughter. A special thank you to Julie, (RN case manager), who assured Judi that she could help her mom live a better quality of life when things looked very grim.

A heartfelt thanks also goes to her son-in-law, Gene. His constant support and help caring for Eileen and visiting her often was a strong support for Judi. Eileen was so pleased and proud when Gene became an ordained minister. She was always telling people about it. When she had to go into surgery a couple of years ago, she got a little confused when introducing Judi and Gene to the doctor. She told him that Gene was a doctor! Judi quickly jumped in to correct her while the doctor was eyeing his “competition.”

Judi also wants to thank her cousin, Robin, for always being available to offer a listening ear or provide assistance at any time. Robin, your knowledge and experience walking this road with your own mom, helped Judi immeasurably. Eileen’s sister, Lucille, who was four years older than her, passed away on January 5, 2020 and there will be a combined celebration of life (see details below). Special thanks also goes to Jolene, long-time family friend, for your continued visits with Eileen. These visits meant the world to Eileen and family. You are loved Jolene.

Just three days before Eileen passed, a miracle happened which will forever be a treasured memory. She had basically been non-responsive for several days and Chris and Sterling wanted to make sure that 10-month-old Jade met her great grandmother. She had tons of pictures and had face-timed with her, but had not met yet in person. Jade was not a good traveler at this time and she cried the entire trip to Sacramento from Santa Cruz, but they pushed through. We weren’t even sure if Eileen would be aware they were there. But the miracle was that we walked in to her room, and Eileen was sitting up in her bed, both eyes fully open, and she was engaging and talking. She had the best visit meeting Jade and visiting with Chris and Sterling. This lasted about 40 minutes before she started to fade and went back to her unresponsive state. This was truly a gift from God and has meant the world to her family.

Those who passed before her also include Leo and Ellen Erickson (parents); Lucille (sister) and Robert Rader; Chester (brother) and Beverly Erickson; and Karen Erickson Imig (niece). She will be sorely missed by Judi Denney (daughter) and Gene Denney of Sacramento; Chris Denney (grandson) and Sterling Denney, and Jade Denney (great-granddaughter) of Capitola; Robin Rader (niece) of San Luis Obispo, Don Rader (nephew) of Paso Robles, Kevin Erickson (nephew) of Paso Robles; and cousins, especially Carolyn and Lorene Anderson (Paso Robles).

One of Eileen’s favorite scriptures was Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight.” (NIV)

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2020, at 1 p.m. at Paso Robles District Cemetery with a Celebration of Life following. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Operation iDream (operationidream.org) who brings education, health, and sustainability to the people of Zambia.

Obituary for William Anthony Winter, 67

William (Bill) Anthony Winter, 67.

–William (Bill) Anthony Winter, 67, passed peacefully in his home in Templeton CA, on the evening of Friday March 6, 2020. Though his beginnings were in Santa Maria, Bill was a long time resident of the North County. The only child of Mr. William Winter and Mrs. Hazel Silvera Winter, Bill was born on 8/2/52. Growing up in Santa Maria, Bill attended Saint Joseph High School after being sent there by his mother on the assumption he would be a better pupil without the distraction of too many girls. He was part of the first class to attend all four years at Saint Joseph, graduating in 1970. After graduating, he attended UCSB and several other universities before settling in Paso Robles in 1975. He met the love of his life, Terrin Minshull, while doing stage work and chorus at Pioneer Players, and after determining he was “going to marry that girl” they were happily wed in November of 1979. Bill joined the Air Force in 1980 proudly serving as a crew chief for F-111 aircraft while stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England. He eventually reclassified to Logistic Plans Tech at RAF Mildenhall where he had his first taste of working with computers. This sparked his lifelong passion for spreadsheets, calculators and all things tech.

While serving in England, Bill and Terrin welcomed their first child, Terence William, in March 1982. After living abroad for 4 years, Bill brought his family home in 1984 and was stationed at George AFB in Victorville, CA where he finished his active duty service. Bill and Terrin welcomed their second child, Kailtyn Elizabeth, in October 1984. Bill was pleased to be the one to deliver his daughter into the world, and stated that he was already an expert, having helped birth goats on his uncle’s ranch in Hollister, CA. Bill and Terrin returned to Paso Robles later in 1984, where he continued his military career in the Air National Guard and began his career in Public Service when he joined the Paso Robles Volunteer FD in 1986. In May of 1994, Bill welcomed his third child, Mark Henry, who was always one of Bill’s best friends and closest assistants. Bill’s career spanned a multitude of various positions, but always with a focus on helping others and making spreadsheets. He was the Executive Manager of the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce for 5 years, Chief of staff for Assemblyman Tom Bordonaro for 4 years, and an AGPA for the California Conservations Corps from 1999-2007. He began his most beloved journey in his career when he joined the CAL FIRE/CDF team as an Administrative Officer in 2007. Some of his greatest adventures were going on incidents with his team, becoming Finance Section Chief and helping to protect the countless resources and people across the state. He proudly retired from Cal Fire in December of 2019.

For those fortunate enough to have known Bill knew he was a man of integrity, compassion and dedication. He taught so much to those who crossed his path, and always welcomed you with a smile. He was a lover of books, science, history and was always searching to learn something new. He had an insatiable sweet tooth and passion for good beer and great food. Many of his colleagues praised him as “The Most Interesting Man at Base Camp.” He was an animal lover, and loved his little farm with his dogs, cats, goats, and chickens. Most importantly he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family more than anything, and for many years shared his love of sweets by bringing doughnuts home every Saturday morning. He was loved dearly by so many, and will be deeply missed.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Bill Winter Sr., mother Hazel Winter and Mother-in-law, Sue Minshull. He is survived by wife, Terrin, sons Terence and Mark (Katelin Bierman), Daughter Kaitlyn (Sheena), Grandson Owen Winter, father-in-law Terry Minshull, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Tracy and Noubar Ouzounian as well as countless cousins, colleagues, and friends.

Please join the family for a celebration of life Saturday, April 18 1 p.m. at the Ravine Water Park, 2301 Airport Rd. Paso Robles,CA. As a tribute to Bill’s love of sweets guests are asked to bring dessert of their choice. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Obituary for Alice 'Florence' McConnell, 82

Obituary for Alice 'Florence' McConnell, 82–Alice “Florence” McConnell, 82, long-time resident of Paso Robles passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020, in Hanford, California. One of five children, Flo was born in Portobello, Scotland to Faber and Alice Dewar. After marrying Robert “Scotty” McConnell in 1957, the two immigrated to the United States of America in 1962. Six years after being in the United States, Flo and Scotty were blessed with their daughter Karen. In 1969, both Flo and Scotty became American citizens.

In 1969, they moved to Paso Robles, which she always referred to as home. Anyone who banked at Crocker Bank in Paso knew Flo. She worked as a bank secretary at Crocker for many years, developing friendships with co-workers and bank customers. Flo enjoyed supporting the Bearcats, traveling all over the state to watch her daughter in both high school and college sports. Flo and Scotty moved to Hanford, Ca in 1999 to be closer to their daughter. Although she treasured being close to Karen and spending time with Karen and her activities, Flo always felt Paso Robles was “home”.

Flo shared 60 wonderful, happy and memorable years of marriage with Scotty. She will always be remembered for her warmth, kindness and generosity of heart. Flo never met a stranger and always made time for anyone who needed her ear or advice. She loved traveling to multiple countries, arts and crafts, her friends from Beta Sigma Phi and her home church, Plymouth Congregational Church in Paso Robles. After a long battle with Parkinson’s, Flo spent her final months at home with her daughter and Lupe, as her faithful companion, always tending to her every need. This allowed her to spend her final weeks without suffering and pain and she can now rest with her heavenly father for eternity. Together again, she has been reunited with her parents and siblings Faber, James and Sylvia.

Flo is survived by her husband Scotty and daughter Karen of Hanford, her sister (Margaret Findlay of Santa Barbara, Ca), her brother-in-law (Thomas McConnell of Musselburgh, Scotland) and many nieces and nephews and very special friends, all of who will miss her greatly.

A heartfelt thank you to Valley Christian Home in Hanford, Optimal Hospice, Lupe Castaneda and many friends and family for your continued prayers and support.

Private service will be held at a later date.
